Passengers Landed in Peshawar Could Probably Be Exposing Pakistan to the More Contagious and Deadly Strain of the Coronavirus

Four people who recently returned from the UK tested positive for coronavirus. This is in conformation from officials in Peshawar, though the National Health Services (NHS) Ministry insists otherwise. The ministry says that though the passengers are COVID-19 positive, they do not have the new strain of the coronavirus. A new strain surfaced in Britain earlier this month and has proven to be more contagious than the first one.

This is in contention with the news from Karachi, where the doctors say that the new strain is in Pakistan too. According to them, a sample is with the medical experts for further evaluation. There is no official verdict for the same.

The new variant transmits 70% more easily than the original one.

Local authorities traced 66 of the 102 passengers who returned to Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa over the last seven days on official orders from the federal government.

District Health Officer (DHO) Peshawar Dr. Azmatullah said they traced 51 of the returning passengers, while 32 were tested for coronavirus. He added that 19 results had been received, from which four were positive and eight tested negative. The remaining results are not in yet, he said.

Dr. Azmatullah said that the contacts of those passengers were tested positive and among them, three results came back positive. According to the DHO, the test reports are with the National Institute of Health (NIH), Islamabad.

Denial by the Authorities

The Ministry of Health denies the emergence of the new variant of Covid-19. It adds that it is monitoring the situation around the new British strain of the pandemic.

”As of today, no such variant of the SARS-CoV-2 has been detected in Pakistan,” it said in a statement issued on Twitter. “The National Institute of Health is sensitive and on alert regarding this new strain for timely detection,” it added.

A notification by the provincial government says that all passengers coming from the UK must submit samples and will also have to stay in quarantine. The province’s health department says the UK-born coronavirus is more severe in terms of its transmission rate than the original one.

Dr. Azmatullah says, the arrival of passengers from the UK is continuing and the authorities are mulling over keeping them in quarantine.

The announcement comes as the country’s national tally of active Covid-19 cases reaches 38,511 with 2,152 more people testing positive for the virus. A lesser than 1,824 patients recovering from it during the last 24 hours.

The Never-Ending Deaths

According to the latest update issued by the National Command and Operations Centre (NCOC), 85 coronavirus patients have died. Moreover, of these 77 were under treatment in hospitals and eight in their homes or in quarantines.

A highly infectious new coronavirus variant in Britain has prompted many countries, including Pakistan, to shut their borders to travelers from there. Experts call the new stain the B.1.1.7 lineage. However, it is not the first new variant of the pandemic virus to emerge since last december.

The B.1.1.7 is up to 70% more transmissible than the previously dominant strain in the United Kingdom. The governments of Australia, South Africa, Italy, and the Netherlands say they detected cases of the new strain.

Zong CMPak Hits Back At PTA For Tarnishing its Image In The Minds Of The End-User and Businesses Alike – Hitting Them With A 600 Billion Damages Notice

In a rather hard response to the fine slapped by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) on Zong CMPak amounting to $29.5 million (approx. PKR 4.73 billion). for the unauthorized and illegal use of some radio frequencies, Zong CMPak has served PTA with a notice claiming PKR 600 billion in compensation against the losses suffered by the company owing to a disturbed radio frequency band that the company had legally obtained from PTA.

Zong CMPak has stated that the radio frequency band issued to it by PTA faced many issues over the years which remain unresolved by PTA causing loss of revenue to the network operator. Not only that Zong CMPak has said that this caused their customer base to decrease due to poor quality of services in the regions with the disputed bands.

Faulty Radio Band Allotment by PTA

This also led to a competitive advantage for other network operators as they possessed radio bands without any interferences allowing them to provide quality services in the region. Despite the challenges, Zong CMPak was rectifying things on its own. This was to provide its customers with the best services which lead Zong CMPak to invest highly in the region.

Instead of working with Zong CMPak, PTA has decided to turn to the legal route and served them with a fine even though Zong CMPak has been serving the country since 2008 and has made significant investments worth more than $2 billion.

Potential 5G Pioneer

Zong CMPak is also the first network operator to test 5G in the country. Our government needs to stop being hasty like FBR did with Jazz in the past month and work on communicating properly with the concerned companies before making a decision as it only causes more embarrassment for the country and may drive more investors away.

5G could be the start of an all-new era. Like all countries in the world, we’re in a race to secure 5G as soon as possible. The technology will allow for AI-based real-time activities. These include self-driving cars and AI-based traffic control systems. These are only some of the applications of 5G. It can be of much more usefulness to the country and will allow for a more connected world. Companies like Huawei are at the core of such technologies. Such measures against Zong and other companies could push back these tech giants that are investing in Pakistan.

Huawei Pakistan showcases the potential that 5G promises.

5G will prove to be the pivot for the whole world. Countries with slow economic development will benefit the most as more and more users enter economic activity. Economic activity coupled with IT is surely the future for Pakistan.

Cases

The government data showed 2,731 new confirmed cases were reported on Tuesday, raising the cumulative infection tally to 445,977. The national case positivity rate has climbed to 7.18%

The NCOC data showed the country recorded 45,495 COVID-19 infections since December 1 at an average of 3,033 cases per day. The number has doubled as the first half of November saw 25,062 infections with an average of 1,670 cases per day while the first 15 days of October saw only 9,005 infections at a daily average of 600.

There are 48,369 active coronavirus cases across the country – out of which 2,510 are critical with 316 patients on ventilators.

The highest ventilator occupancy is in Multan (48%) and Islamabad (46%) while Peshawar has most number of oxygen beds occupied at 64%. Oxygen bed occupancy in Rawalpindi is at 42% and in Multan, at 41%.

Recoveries

According to the NCOC, Pakistan has one of the highest recovery rates in the world. The country reported 2,265 new recoveries in the past 24 hours, bringing the national tally of recovered patients to 388,598.

So far in December, a total of 45,312 people have recovered from the virus.

With the rising spread of the virus, the federal government on December 9 warned it would shut down more sectors if the public continued to violate coronavirus SOPs.

Federal Minister for Planning and Development and NCOC chief Asad Umar said there was a rapid increase in infections during the second wave as the public was less serious than it was during the first wave.

He warned that if the virus is not contained, the government may decide to close down more sectors and impose stricter restrictions in two weeks’ time.

Coping Mechanism: Current restrictions

The federal government has already made face masks mandatory in public spaces. Large public gatherings are limited to 300, moreover, indoor weddings are banned. The government has closed shrines, cinemas, and theatres. Public and private offices are to adopt a work-from-home policy and 50% occupancy.

The federal government has also announced that educational institutes will remain closed from November 26 to January 10. Students will study at home or get weekly homework by December 24 and winter vacations will start December 25. The schools will reopen on January 11 – which is subject to coronavirus situation then. All examinations are facing a delay except admission tests, recruitment tests, and professional examinations.

Furthermore, all provinces have banned indoor dining and limited timings for markets, shops, and shopping malls. Many areas of the country are under smart lockdown.

Mass gatherings

The country is facing a very confusing time as the atmosphere is intensely political. There are massive gatherings and protests going on across the country. People attending these mass gatherings and jalsas are mostly without face masks and social distancing.

Private Patients Even With The Power and Ability To Pay Will Have To Wait Out To Get The Vaccine

The statement came after a report in The Express Tribune claimed that the government has allowed the private sector to “…cater to the segment of society that can afford..”.

Irresponsible Journalism

Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) CEO Mr. Asim Rauf also came forward to rebuke the irresponsible journalism and also refuted the report. Mr. Asim Rauf said:

“Nothing of this sort has been done. Such permissions can’t be given at this point because governments all over the world are struggling to procure Covid-19 vaccines,”

According to the need of the hour, Pakistan has allocated funds of $250 million to the acquisition of the COVID-19 vaccine. Moreover, there are a number of signed non-disclosure agreements with various multinational companies. Under the restrictions, no country the authority to make the contents of the agreement or the vaccine details public.

Prior to the latest statement, the government had a budget of $150m for the vaccine. The parliamentary secretary of the National Health Services (NHS) said,

“We will sign a purchase agreement with more than one company to ensure that we get a vaccine (in case any of the available vaccine fails). Russia had also offered us its vaccine recently. However, we are looking into its safety and efficacy as public health is our top priority,”

Dr. Nausheen Hamid, the Parliamentary Secretary, is hoping that the delivery of the vaccine will start by the end of the first quarter of next year.

Government Plans For COVID-19 Vaccine Distribution

According to her,

However, we are not going to give the vaccine to everyone. According to our priority list, in the first phase, healthcare workers attending to COVID-19 patients and people over 65 years will be vaccinated.

“In the second phase, the remaining healthcare workers and people over 60 years of age will get preference. Moreover, GAVI has also pledged to provide vaccine for 20pc population which comes to 45 million people,” she added.

According to the plans of the government only by the end of 2021, the vaccine will be available to the masses.

The need of the vaccine is dire at this point. The cases have started climbing again and the curve is sloping sharply upwards. In the past 24 hrs, another 36 patients lost their lives and another 2300 tested positive for the virus.
