Pakistan Sets Its Eyes on an All-Electric Future, Hoping to Have 30% Electric Drivetrain Cars by 2030

Authorities from Pakistan have informed the UN of their plans to ensure that at least 30 percent of the vehicles used in the country are zero-emissions with an all-electric drivetrain.

Along with Denmark and Norway, Pakistan co-chairs a 32-nation Group of Friends on Sustainable Energy, which is committed to a transition from fossil fuel to renewable energy.

Pakistan is also a member of the Group of Friends on Climate Change, which is also committed to promoting the use of safe, renewable energy.

Speaking at a virtual meeting of this group in New York earlier this week, Pakistan’s UN Ambassador Munir Akram warned that most developing countries could fail to fulfill their commitments to the goal of creating a clean environment if they were not helped in making an adequate recovery from the Covid-19 crisis.

“If developing countries are destitute, if there are humanitarian disasters, if we are unable to recover from Covid, I think all other actions for many developing countries will become irrelevant,” he said. “So urgent and immediate actions are needed.”

An Electric Solution to the Global Warming

The Pakistani envoy, who is also the president of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), urged major emitters of harmful gases into the atmosphere to fulfil their commitment to creating a safe and clean environment for all.

“There are positive indications I agree, but I believe that these should be made much clearer as we go forward, especially from the biggest country, the United States,” he said. “We look forward to what the new US administration will have to say in the coming months.”

Urging the world’s leading nations to fulfil their pledge for the hundred billion annual commitment on climate finance, Ambassador Akram said: “I think for many developing countries that will be an acid test.”

Pakistan, he said, was one of the smallest emitters of carbon in the world, but it’s also one of the most vulnerable countries with devastating environmental impact.

“We have an extensive and ambitious plan, both on adaptation, mitigation,” he said, adding that Pakistan was committed to meeting the targets set by various international agreements for promoting clean energy.

“We are also a champion on financing investment in renewable energy, and we look forward to playing that role as well,” he said.

Ambassador Akram also underlined the need for concrete progress on development transfer and deployment of technology in developing countries.

In August, Pakistan unveiled a plan to boost the share of renewable energy to 30 per cent by 2030, up from about 4 per cent today.

The Transition Strategy

During the first phase, Pakistan aims to increase the share of renewables in power mix to 30 per cent by 2025. The targeted mix will include mainly wind and solar power, but also geothermal, tidal, wave and biomass energy.

With boosts in hydropower capacity, Pakistan hopes to bring the share of clean energy in its electricity mix to 65 per cent by 2030.

There are plans to build seven more coal-fired power plants for the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor project. This could potentially prevent the country from reaching this goal.

Clean energy and the all-electric future have also been delayed across the globe due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Vaccine For Novel Coronavirus Will Likely Be Available In Pakistan By February

Health authorities from Pakistan are in contact with China and Russia, among several other countries, for the procurement of coronavirus vaccines.

Special assistant to the Prime Minister, Mr. Faisal Sultan, said

“We are in talks with China, Russia and some other countries for procurement of the [Covid-19] vaccine after narrowing down our priority list,”

Mr. Sultan said the vaccine would be procured in the coming days and subject to mass production and should be available in Pakistan sometime between January and March 2021.

In the first phase of its application, the coronavirus vaccine will be administered to health workers and senior citizens according to the decisions of the health department.

The special assistant to the Prime Minister added,

“There is nothing final yet; however, I can tell you that we have to rely on more than one source,” the adviser said. “We will procure the vaccine only after its efficacy and safety is proven.”

While Russia has started the distribution of its Sputnik V Covid-19 shot nationwide, China is testing its vaccines in many countries, and supply deals are being signed.

Other vaccines seeking emergency use authorization are produced by Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, and Oxford-AstraZeneca. Pakistan is also testing more than three different vaccines from its medical institutes.

The High Costs Associated with Coronavirus Vaccine Administration

Another problem in from of Islamabad is that of finances to secure the vaccines. According to an estimate, more than $1 bn would be required to administer the vaccine successfully.

As for the initial purchases $150 million have been allocated to secure the first batch.

Last week, Dr. Nausheen Hamid, Parliamentary Secretary for Health, said all citizens would be getting the Covid-19 vaccines free of charge, and the drive will begin in the second quarter of 2021.

But, considering the limited number of vaccines that will be available once the vaccine is launched at a mass scale, some kind of a priority would have to be defined.

Recent weeks have been particularly hard for Pakistan. The number of cases are spiking again.

The South Asian country recorded 3,795 new infections on Monday, the highest single-day tally since July 3. The infection rate is also increasing

The Ever-Increasing Infection Rate

The total caseload in the country of 220 million people has reached 420,294, including 8,398 related deaths. Pakistan has tested about 5.8 million people for coronavirus, and the infection rate currently stands at 9%.

The testing capacity of the labs is improving and public labs are now conducting more tests than private ones.

The data sourced from NCOC also suggests that the improvements being made are in the right direction but may be too little too late as the time for imposing a lockdown is long gone. The spike is showing no signs to waning.

Barbaros will be directed by the Taylan brothers who were the directors of Muhtesem Yuzyıl (The Magnificent Century). Barbarossa Series expected to release on 21st March 20201.

Who was Barbaros in Real History?

Barbaros is one of the most important naval commanders of the Ottoman Empire. Although his real name is Hızır Reis, Yavuz Sultan Selim gave him the name Hayreddin (goodness of the faith) because he did useful things for the state. Hayreddin’s older brother is Oruc Reis, and he was named Barbaros (Barbarossa), which means red beard in Italian. Oruc Reis was captured at a young age by the knights of Rhodes, and after he got rid of them he started to work for the Mamluk fleet. Oruc Reis gained strength in a short time and caused great damage to the Italian and Spanish navy in the Mediterranean. Oruc and his brother Hayreddin took over Algeria by piracy in the Mediterranean.

Oruc Reis lost his left arm in a war with the Spaniards and was killed soon after. Hayreddin continued to use his brother’s name Barbaros and began to get closer to the Ottoman Empire. Hayreddin stopped the Italians in the Mediterranean and captured Tunisia. This situation was appreciated by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, and Barbaros Hayreddin was called to Istanbul and declared the commander of the Ottoman navy. Barbaros strengthened Turkish domination in the Mediterranean and became famous all over the world for his conquests. Barbaros died in Istanbul shortly after he helped the French navy conquer the city of Nice.

The character of Oruc Reis will be played by the famous actor Engin Altan Duzyatan, whom the audience knows from Dirilis Ertugrul. Also, Hayreddin, the main character of the television series, will be played by Ulas Tuna Astepe.

Science Diplomacy Pakistan, a specialized division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, also sent out a tweet regarding the same on Saturday.

‘COV-RAID’ accuracy is more than 90%. It is an extremely cost-effective and universally accessible diagnostic tool that saves the most important resource of all time.

In a tweet from their official handle, Science Diplomacy Pakistan congratulated the National Electronics Complex of Pakistan (NECOP) and the country’s scientists on developing this tool.

It said Pakistan was ready to explore collaborations and partnerships to share this technology with the world.

The Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) has conducted a trial of COV-RAID detection of coronavirus. It uses chest X-rays which are then analyzed using artificial intelligence, the National Command and Operating Centre said.

Science Diplomacy Initiative

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs owns the ‘Science Diplomacy’ webpage and the specialized department is a part of an effort to increase its contribution to the global scientific landscape. The Ministry can create synergies for international scientific cooperation using this platform.

A data repository of chest X-rays has been created to fine-tune the diagnostic software’s ability and more data is being directly fed into the system to improve itself. Furthermore, it can help identify coronavirus symptoms in patients, as per the COV-RAID website.

The software can utilize chest X-ray images of millions of coronavirus patients and compare that to millions of ‘healthy’ x-ray samples and the AI engine can detect whether the person has the virus or not.

The system is self-sufficient and will only improve with time and more tests. The COV-RAID is an out-of-the-box approach to detecting the virus.

COV-RAID can be used at isolation centers for the prognosis of patients to monitor their way towards recovery. This way the elusive coronavirus kits and the testing capacity problem will be totally solved. Moreover, millions of tests can be done in a day and anyone infected can be separated from the public.

People are not following SOPs are the gravity of the situation is being overlooked.

ISLAMABAD: The capital territory has reported the highest COVID-19 bed utilization rate across the whole country.

District administration officials provided data showing that a total of 362 beds were set aside for COVID-19 patients in twelve hospitals in Islamabad. On Saturday, 240 of these 362 beds were occupied. That’s a whopping 66.2% utilization rate.

Ministers are aware of the situation but have failed to implement measures to bring the situation under control. Mr. Asad Umer, the federal minister for planning tweeted,

In contrast, the province of Punjab has 10.1% utilization rate. 877 out of the set aside 8,624 beds were reserved.

Kashmir ranks third with a utilization rate of 8.4%. 78 out of the 918 beds were occupied. Gilgit-Balitistan has a utilization rate of 6.9% as 11 out of 158 COVID-19 allocated beds were occupied.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the rate stood at 6.2%. The province has over 5,400 beds and 339 are in use. The province of Sindh has the greatest number of beds set aside for COVID patients with over 11,300 beds set aside, out of which 553 are occupied. This is about 4.8% of the capacity.

Balochistan has 827 beds allocated to COVID patients, however, only 24 were occupied with a 2.1% utilization rate.

Ever Rising Infection Rate

Over the last 24 hours, 7025 tests were conducted in the city out of which 458 people were found carrying the virus.

The officials said that out of the 240 patients admitted to hospitals, 24 were stable, 89 on low flow oxygen, and 84 on high flow oxygen.

There are reports of more young people contracting the virus than elderly people. The government is adamant that there is no need for a lockdown. Moreover, the educational institutions are mimicking the dogmatic stance of the administration and are not agreeing to shift the educational activities online.

Ministers for education from all the provinces agreed to a meeting of education secretaries and officials where the future would be decided. Sadly, half the secretaries and ministers were not available at the time and when they did become available, no decision was made whatsoever.
