Pakistan’s Most Popular Game PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds PUBG Declared Haram to Play In A Fatwa

It is safe to say that PUBG – PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is the most popular real-time game on our smartphones these days. The game has over 100000 users online at any given time. This number went as high as 2 million in recent months.

PUBG has taken all platforms by storm ever since it got out. It is supported on all popular platforms, including Android, iOS, PS4, and Xbox. However, there is a platform that did not approve of the game. Dar-ul-Iftaa, a religious school in Karachi, has issued a fatwa against PUBG.

PUBG and Pakistan - The Bans and The Haraam Fatwas

Scholars from Dar-ul-Iftaa were asked if it was permissible to play PUBG under the injunctions of Islam. According to reports, the school has issued a detailed fatwa in response. The language of the fatwa is strict with it terming people who play PUBG as exiled from the circle of Islam.

The question was put to the institute to verify if they had issued any fatwas regarding PUBG.

The Fatwas

To this, they replied that because of the addictive nature of the game, people are avoiding their religious and even worldly responsibilities and such a play/sport cannot be allowed under the injunctions of Islam.

The fatwa goes into detail and says that the mysterious jungle mode on the game requires praying to and worshiping idols. This act is equivalent to Shirq and can never be allowed. Even if the person is not bowing down himself, but his character is. This act gives out a false impression that you can pray to other entities other than Allah. According to Dar-ul-Ifta, any person following such a thing is no longer from Islam as he would be committing shirk.

There are other fatwas by Dar-ul-Itfa which state that one who bows down in the game will have to renew their faith in Allah. If they are married, they will have to renew their marriage (nikkah) as well. Furthermore, you can renew your faith in Allah in private, but the renewal of nikkah requires witnesses.

Is It Haram To Play PUBG?

Other information in the fatwa was that the game itself is not haram as long as the player avoids non-Islamic practices. Additionally, they still said, in the fatwa that the player will not be expelled from Islam. But, will still be committing sin. Added to that, it is appreciable that in the past PUBG has taken down such content when it received backlash from the public.

The latest fatwa says that agreeing to a shirk based game cannot be allowed. It is not a compulsion in Islam to absolutely play PUBG. It is a luxury, not a necessity. hence the fatwa suggests against doing that at all costs.

Previously, PTA (Pakistan Telecommunications Authority) placed a ban on PUBG owing to wasting time and having indecent content. But, PUBG was quick to patch the content and introduce a new update.

Keeping in view too many complaints from all sectors of the society, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has issued instructions before blocking the TikTok.

Despite receiving several warnings, TikTok has never improved its app to prevent users from unethical and vulgar content. PTA kept in view all the complaints, TikTok reckless behaviour, nature of the content being constantly posted on TikTok and banned this app.

On 9th October 2020, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has issued instructions for blocking of the application.

Tiktok is owned by the China-based company ByteDance. The company responded shortly after getting banned in Pakistan. The ByteDance said, “we are committed to following the law wherever the app is offered,”.

While in a narrative it is said that, “We have been in regular communication with the PTA and continue to work with them. We are hopeful to reach a conclusion that helps us continue to serve the country’s vibrant and creative online community,”. “We have sound measures to help ensure a safe and welcoming platform for users. Including easy mechanisms to report content that violates our terms and comprehensive Community Guidelines, which are available in Urdu,”. TikTok also mentioned that its top priority is to keep the in-app environment healthy, safe and positive.

On the other side, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has declared that “Authority is open for engagement”. And “will review its decision subject to a satisfactory mechanism by TikTok to moderate unlawful content”.

It means both sides are open for discussion to this matter. There are high possibilities for the TikTok to satisfy the Pakistani government by curbing its rules and regulations. So the good news is, maybe you can see TikTok working in Pakistan after resolving all the issues between ByteDance and PTA. However, the company is leaned to the government in accepting all the conditions.

TikTok—Under pressure from regulators across the globe

It seems like TikTok left no more for the people of earth. As some countries have banned and many are thinking to take action against it. On 29 June 2020, TikTok has banned in India by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. With a statement that “they were prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, the security of the state and public order”.

Japan is also thinking of inflicting a ban on the application nationwide. Indonesia and Bangladesh also considered this issue and have banned TikTok. Indonesia has banned this platform in 2018, authorities then overturned which.

Some other countries, like the US, gave a deadline to it. The American company “Microsoft” wants to buy TikTok as it has a lot of security issues which Microsoft can resolve. On 6 August 2020, Donald Trump has signed over the executive order to ban TikTok in 45 days if it has not sold by ByteDance.

On August 2020, again trump has signed over an executive order giving ByteDance 90 days to sell it or spin off its business from the US. Trump declared that “there is credible evidence that made him believe that ByteDance might take action that threatens to impair the national security of the US.

On 23 September 2020, TikTok has requested a preliminary injunction to prevent the app from being banned by the Trump administration. The preliminary injunction approved by justice Carl J. Nichols on September 27.

The ISPR asserts that the initiative will act as a “trigger for the development of the cyber industry” in the rapidly progressing Gilgit-Baltistan area.

The IT industry is the future of any country. The IT-related exports are skyrocketing, and such IT parks will help a lot in further expanding this industry. Moreover, the location of Gilgit city is along the Asian Highway 1 and is part of the National Highway Network.

This puts Gilgit right on the road that connects China in the north to Gwader Sea Port in the south. Hence, the capital of Gilgit-Baltistan will prove to be a pivotal city in the future.

The presence of an IT park in such a city will prove its worth in the coming time. This will help in greater digitization while contributing to the development of these areas.

Special Communications Organization

The project is spearheaded by the Special Communications Organization that is operated by the Ministry of IT and Communications Pakistan. SCO is operating several high-profile projects in Azad Jammu & Kashmir, and Gilgit Baltistan. Added to that, SCO is pursuing projects that will help realize the dream of a digital and better Pakistan.

To put that in perspective, there are 14 such IT parks in the country. But, most of these are in the major three cities of Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad. People from all over Pakistan do not get the same exposure as the professionals who can work at these facilities.
