By the summer of 1676, the balance had turned against Metacom.

Native forces were exhausted.

Food was scarce.

Alliances were weakening.

English authorities were offering incentives to Native people who surrendered or changed sides.

Some Native fighters began leaving the resistance.

Others attempted to negotiate.

Metacom retreated toward the region around Mount Hope, in what is now Rhode Island.
